'Win first, worry about bonus points later'

New Zealand are primarily concerned with winning their Tri-Nations match against South Africa this weekend and not trying to get pre-occupied by adding a bonus point, captain Richie McCaw said on Friday.

The All Blacks have a mathematical chance of capturing the title for a fifth successive season if they beat the world champion Springboks and score four tries to gain a bonus fifth point at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Saturday.

They must then repeat the performance against Australia in Wellington on September 19 to snatch the title from the grasp of the Springboks who lead the competition on 17 points. New Zealand have eight points, while Australia have seven.

"First and foremost we have to go out to perform and look to win the test match. What happens after that, you see how the game unfolds," McCaw told reporters after his team's final training run on a greasy Waikato Stadium smothered by low-hanging cloud.

"You got out to score tries every week, it would be nice to score four every week. "Maybe at the end of the game, depending on what the state of it is, you might tweak some decisions but the first job is to win the game."

Springboks captain John Smit echoed McCaw's comments and with the weather forecasting rain showers on Saturday, any open-running rugby is likely to be shelved for hard-driving forward play and tactical aerial bombardments.

BASIC ERRORS

"A lot has been written of them having to throw the ball around and chase the five points, but I don't think that is what we will get due to the nature of the weather and the venue," Smit said at the Springboks' hotel.

"I think it will be a game that will come down to the wire. It will be a game where they employ what they think will be the most accurate tactics to get a win first.

"It's not easy at this level, particularly with the two best sides in the world playing each other and I'm sure they will be playing a clever game to make sure the win comes first then look to see what is out there."

The All Blacks have stuttered through their international season, making numerous basic errors that have allowed teams, most notably the Springboks, to build pressure inside their half and then kick penalties when transgressions occurred.

The All Blacks bumbled their way to 28-19 and 31-19 losses in South Africa, with the second match in Durban notable for elementary handling errors and poor decision making.

McCaw said his side had been working hard to eliminate those errors at training all week, and to turn the pressure back on the Springboks.

"It snowballs at times. One error causes three points and then another one and guys get a bit jittery," McCaw said.

"We were under pressure the whole time for those two tests (in South Africa). "We were trying to play from that but it made it tough... we've got to do that to them."

im sort of sick of hearing about the greatness of this south african team. You won against a crap all black team at the moment and a aussie team that is totally rebuilding!!! and your heralding yourselves as this incredible team. Dont get me wrong you are playing great rugby at the moment but wake up, the heat is coming from both nations. If you beat New Zealand when they are in form and aussie then you can start stroking your selves. Good luck drop kicking your way to a win!

When s.a was playing crap and the all blaks were winning, OH WHAT A GREAT SIDE, WHAT A FANTASTIC TEAM. Look live in the real world. here are some facts umm. The great all black team won the first world cup hip hip, so what, they played all crap teams, S.A WAS NOT PART of that world cup thanks to folks like you. shut-up and put-up and i give you an FU- for your whining.

Sad to see supporters of a great SA team having to stoop to basic insults against a team that I know deep down they do respect. Saying that NZ won the WC in 1987 without having to beat good sides is ridiculous and an insult to a great French tema at the time. Also suggesting that you would have won in 87 and 91 because you beat the cavaliers? Comeon, you guys know more about Rugby than that I am sure. 1995 was a great WC and you guys deserved to win because you beat us in the finals, and because of what it meant to a new SA to see Mandela there in a Springbok jersey. But I watched every one of those games and no one who knows anything about Rugby could seriously argue NZ were not the best team there. Your team played a great game plan to perfectiuona nd we choked (the first of many). Just because one Kiwi says some stupid comments (that I dont agree with by the way) dont let yoursleves down by stooping to his level. Proud AB supporter through thick and thin (and my God have there been some thins! Twickenham 99 par example!) I cant wait for Saturday!

Goosold, we do not suggest anything, but thank you for exposing your false thoughts. NZ did not compete against all the rugby playing nations, that is a fact you can ignore, but you cant change the historical record. Those days of NZ RULLING THE RUGBY WORLD NO LONGER EXISTS, JUST ACCEPT IT. We are not asking you to choke, just play the game accept defeat and celebrate victory, very simple right! Unfortunately it is not enough for these AB's supporters whose team have a wonderfull wining record, they just can't help themselves, they have to shove their excuses down our throats. Yes responses and push backs to AB's/kiwis/nz, whatever invokes...oh '....thank you for that level-headed resonse' can't we all get along type of bull, tranlated...just shup up, i do not want to hear any more facts, i cant take this reality anymore please save me.

Jesus Christ, de sousa - You guys are terrific and your team is a great rugby side. Take a compliment like a gentleman or go choose a different sport to support. SA has deservedly won 2 world cups. NZ has deservedly won 1. Whether one side is better than the other on a Platonic playing field is a fun debate, and it can be had without silliness. SA was missed during its years of isolation, and I watched the Currie Cup matches when I could and saw that you guys were playing scarily good rugby back then. But you take on the teams that show up, win with what you have against what you meet. That's the game. Like Travis said - win or lose, our teams do our countries proud. By the way, next time you want to say something like "S.A WAS NOT PART of that world cup thanks to folks like you.", look at the five numbers on the sleeve of your boys' jersey, and remember that it was folks like the one who gave Mandela that number who kept you out of the world, and folks like the boys who wear it now with pride that brought you back. Your 95 victory was one of the greatest moments in world sport, and although we lost I am and was thrilled to see the return of our great rival. As for you, goosoid... I'm sending you wishes for a frosty pint of NZ's best, a second if we can take this thing in Hamilton. Go BLACK!!

hmmm, nice one!! well they won and it was well deserved jdesousa, lets clear that up before the profanities start again. I will look forward to the future of this team as the big boys are gettin on a little and hope they have a good rebuilding program set in place to keep this team at the top!! we will see. Longevity is key , as the all blacks are accustomed to as the best ever rugby team to play the game. Its so sad they just keep choking at the world cup, but funnily enough even though they have lost the world cups they managed to be the top rugby team in the world . Longevity buddy longevity. I would be stoked if i was you to win over us too!! its not been easy for ya. Anyhow good game and well one.
