Palu breaks Reds' hearts

A late try on full time by Wallaby No 8 Wycliff Palu broke the Queensland Reds' hearts in Brisbane on Saturday, as his 14-man Waratahs side stole the result in the final minutes of the game, winning 30-28.

Blow-by-blow scoring

It was a sad end for a brave Queensland Reds performance under new coach Ewen McKenzie, as the perennial bottom-dwellers in the Super 14 played with passion on their home ground.

And it was eventually their own playmaker, Quade Cooper, who had inspired much of their play, that missed the tackle on Palu on his own tryline that gave the visitors the victory.

The Waratahs were down to 14 men at the time, after lock Dean Mumm was sent to the sin bin for charging into a ruck with his shoulder.

Mumm was earlier also the villain when the Reds were awarded a penalty try after he first impeded scrumhalf Will Genia in a chase for the ball, and then deliberately knocked the ball out in the dive.

At that stage it seemed as if the Reds would finally get a win over their neighbours after their last victory in 2003.

The game, which was far from the spectacle of the rest of the weekend, started off slowly with Cooper and Waratah flyhalf Berrick Barnes -- a former Reds player who was booed whenever he touched the ball -- keeping the scoreboard ticking over with their boot.

Barned opened the scoring with a drop goal, but the Reds took the lead when former All Black Daniel Braid finished off a Digby Ione break after a superb long pass by Cooper.

At 10-6 half time, the Reds started well in the second half when lock James Horwill crashed over to extend the lead and Cooper added a penalty.

The boot dictated most of the middle part of the half, as Barnes kept plugging the penalties to bring the match evenly poised at 21-18 with 15 minutes to go.

But then the penalty try turned matters in the Reds' favour, with the Waratahs hitting back immediately when Rory Sidey finished off a surge from inside their own half.

Mumm’s departure shortly afterwards looked like the Reds would close it out, but Palu’s score was greeted with celebration from the Waratahs players, and widespread disbelief from the crowd.

SCORERS:

Waratahs: Tries - Rory Sidey, Wycliff Palu. Conversion - Daniel Halangahu. Penalties - Berrick Barnes (4), Halangahu. Dropped Goal - Barnes.

Reds: Tries - Daniel Braid, James Horwill, penalty try. Conversions - Quade Cooper (2). Penalties - Cooper (2). Dropped Goal - Cooper.

Actually it was Will Caldwell who knocked the ball out of Genia's hands for the penalty try, not Dean Mumm. And it's Dean Mumm in the photo, not Caldwell! get it rght guys!! Sloppy!

I froze up right before the end of the match (VOD), but just backed the button up a bit and then it went on and was good through to the end.

now real problems for me, streaming is excellent, picture quality superb. I use to only watch by downloading the files the last 2 yrs.....last yr i had a sound problem with files so I had to use on demand..which doesn't even come close to this yrs quality. The only problem I have is on some matches buffering will count down to zero....and the will not re-buffer itself.....so i just refresh and go back to the time it happened during the match ....then its good to go for the rest of the match. So as I said, I really have nothing to complain about.......

about the match its self......like one of the announcers said...."the second best team won"! I agree.....the reds dominated the match for sure.....I especially liked how they kept ball in hand.....I can only remember only a few times they booted the ball from hand, kinda nice not seeing the ping pong match. I felt really bad for the reds..........especially since thats who i wanted to see win = )

i'm having trouble with the on demand too. I spoke to them and they said it only works on IE. Pity I use firefox. Does anyone else also think the quality on flash isn't as good as Windows media player. I used to watch the games last year through my TV and the picture was pretty good. Now with flash the picture is too pixelated and jumpy. I can only watch it now on a half screen on my laptop. Anyone else got the same problem???

@ Toby Francis - totally agree. Live matches last year were streamed at at least 700k, and in both Flash & WMP. This year it's only Flash, and at 500k. The quality is poor, and really disappointing considering I never used the inferior option (Flash) last year at all. That said, the on demand quality is good, at 1000k. I do prefer watching matches live though.

This is getting ridiculous. Less tournaments coverred, higher prices, difficulty watching the freaking games, what is going on? I use to think this was a great site, feels like its time to move on.

Windows media files were superior, so they stopped those. You could go back a couple of years to look at archives, which was great, so they cut that off. Now the games crash while streaming, and the non-live files briefly worked, but now don't at all. Great that we can watch the one-eyed Saffer TV shows though. Every customer service email starts with "Greetings!" like everything is hunky dory. Let's face it, this is a business in decline. They can't deliver their product.

This site continues to remove content and services. Now ReUnion which I watched every Tuesday isn't on for some reason. Highlights don't work, On Demand doesn't work. Going to watch highlights on YouTube on live streaming of the games from a p2p site. This site is a joke.

Couldn't watch VOD yesterday. Sent an email. They responded this morning and everything is fine---for now. Apparently IE 8 is the problem. I uninstalled it, going back to IE 7, cleared my history and cookies and then the VOD worked. Excellent quality. Frustrating, but at least I got to watch the Crusaders/Highlanders.

I'm a bit late onto this one, but unfortunately I still can't watch more than 30 seconds of VOD before Flash crashes; should be called "Crash Player"! The last few years were much better with WMP options and good service and quality. I've tried tech support twice over the past few weeks and have gotten no where. Have tried to watch VOD on three computers no with IE (7 and 8) and Firefox, and nothing works. Dissapointing! Time to cancel my subscription...
